The U.S. is the largest walnut producer in the world. Production is concentrated in California, especially in the Sacramento valley.

walnuts are very popular even in Germany. Thousands of tonnes
of walnuts are imported in the months leading up to Christmas,
and these are sold to the retail trade. Expirience has shown
that the walnut trade in Germany peaks around Christmas. Walnuts
are also supplied to other European countries, among
them Austria, the Netherlands and Spain. |

are traded thoughout the year. Shelled walnuts in resalable
cellophane pouches are proving to the extremely popular and
are sold all year round.

| The
California Walnut Industry |
is
made up of over 5,000 walnut growers and about 50 walnut processors
(marketers) and is represented by two organizations, the Walnut
Marketing Board (WMB) and the California Walnut Commission (CWC).
The California Walnut Commission (CWC), established in 1987,
is a State of California Commission, which is involved mainly
in export market development activities as well as nutrition
research. The CWC is funded by mandatory assessments of the
growers and works in concurrence with the Secretary of the California
Department of Food and Agriculture. Download
