| Fresh,
delicious and healthy,
the California walnut harvest! |
 In
California, the sunshine state on the West Coast of the US,
is the world’s largest walnut producing area. September
to November is drupe harvest time when the harvesters from these
huge plantations shake out over 280,000 tons of walnuts from
the trees, which are then exported throughout the world.
Germany is among the largest export markets for California walnuts.
Germans indulge in almost 20,000 tons of walnuts each year –
as a snack, in ice cream or as an ingredient for salads, desserts
and entrees. Since October, a new harvest of fresh walnuts has
been available in shops. Practical for the kitchen: walnut kernels
in bags or jars – cracking savings |
The California walnut industry is made up of over 5,000 walnut growers and
about 50 walnut processors (marketers) and is represented by two organizations, the Walnut Marketing Board (WMB) and the California Walnut Commission (CWC).

| 2004 another record! |

California expected another good harvest this year. Estimations
of approx. 294.835 tons confirmed at the end of August
showed to be true. An early harvest approx. 14 days prior to
last year’s date had been expected. And the quality? The quality
of this year’s harvest is remarkably good, the importers
were busy.
The Walnut Marketing Board issues a monthly recap of domestic and export shipments of walnuts (PDF format). View Last Report |
 Contributing
to the further 21% increase in walnut kernel
imports is due to its availability in the discount sector.
Not to mention that German consumers are incorporating walnut
kernels into their daily diet more and more.
Another fact is the extremely high nutritional
value of walnuts documented by several studies. |

| The
California Quality System |
 With
the California Quality System for inshell walnuts, the so-called
Sorter IQ System, the problem of cracked or broken nuts in walnuts
harvested early no longer exists. There is no longer a need
to wait until the harvest.
